Our brief was to create a winery and hospitality space for Booker Wines that would embody the ethos of the brand, and of its owner/winemaker, Eric Jensen. Set on 100 acres on the west side of Paso Robles, both the vineyard and wines are named after the site’s original owners – who had dedicated their lives to being great farmers, humanitarians and stewards of the land.

In our design approach, we took our cue from Eric Jensen, a self-professed minimalist, and his belief that a fanciful winery and expensive gadgetry do nothing to make a wine better. Our goal was to design a space that provides a casual, welcoming atmosphere for visitors, while reflecting Eric Jensen’s minimalist philosophy of interfering with the land as little as possible when crafting his wines.

The project began with a thoughtful approach to the location in its historical, geographical, geological, topographic and symbolic dimensions, anchoring itself to the terrain seeking a unitary operation in all its dimensions.

The site is located in the area of Rioja Alta, in the municipality of Ollauri. The surrounding slopes are very gentle, forming a plateau on which the lands of the vineyard extend, dotted with small hills.

This plateau is dominated to the north and south by mountain formations.Taking advantage of an 8-meter concave terrain facing southeast, the winery is embedded, leaving the production architectural program underground and placing the social program above ground. This strategy permits:Production by gravity: the loading of the grapes is carried out at the upper level, processing in a descending manner.Taking advantage of thermal inertia: the wine production, aging and storage spaces are below

The new school of Komořany is located on a northern sloping plot adjacent to the forest at the edge of Prague. We perceive the plot as a connecting transition between the forest and the new public infrastructure – a transition between the wild and the cultivated. The new building responds to the morphology of the plot.

We connect the individual floors to the adjacent height levels of the surrounding terrain and neighboring streets. We use the maximum of the dramatic elevation – immersing the building to the terrain we cover the volume of the new school. Three volumes with the same footprint are set on top of each other, cascading towards the forest and therefore creating the residential roofs. We place the school as close to the eastern edge of the plot as possible.

SKAMLINGSBANKEN – AN ARCHITECTURAL PORTAL TO NATURE AND HISTORYThe new visitor centre at Skamlingsbanken in Kolding is an architectural portal to the glacial landscape and its history of democratic events. The centre is designed as a natural and integrated part of the undulating landscape and from the overall design to the small details, visitors will experience an architecture that finds its origin in Skamlingsbanken’s unique nature and history.

A common ground for democratic culture – then, now, and in the future
Skamlingsbanken holds a central place in Danish history, and over time it has been a setting for debates about democracy, the border country and women’s suffrage.

In the past, Skamlingsbanken – due to its undulating landscape with hollows and hills – was a natural gathering point sheltered from the wind, and many civil gatherings and festivals, therefore, took place right here.
