‘Faubourg Citoyens’ is a project about creating a new centrality to rejuvenate Saint Sauveur, a special place in Tours, where it has a rich industrial history. However, it has become neglected for many years. Nonetheless, Saint Sauveur has many assets which we want to support by bringing out the district’s rich identity.We attempt to incorporate themes of creativity, innovation, inclusivity, community and learning for everyone here at ‘Faubourg Citoyens’, through amenities like participatory housing, retailing by locals, workshops and Fablab to encourage innovation and tourism.We have 3 key innovations.

From the top, Casa de los Milagros (House of Miracles) is all earth-colored mosaic glass curves and unexpectedly-shaped windows, the kind of place one might expect to find a caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland smoking a pipe. The varying heights of the convex slopes that make up the roof bring to mind a large sea creature in motion.

Looking at it from ground level, smooth, earth-colored concrete seems to support the top half like a particularly large stem of a mushroom. Finally, the curved base of the house gives it the appearance of a floating, organic creation. Indeed, the house itself is a kind of Rorschach test: like clouds or abstract art, the interpretation of its unique shape is in the eye of the beholder.

Originally designed to serve as a Mormon Meetinghouse in 1958 and later as an office building in the early 1980’s, Meetinghouse at 3080 is the new home to UEB. Referencing both the history of the Meetinghouse as well as the future of the company, the space assimilates and clarifies through the designed balance of hand and machine.

A fire that destroyed many of the structural elements as well as two building additions in the early 1980’s allowed for the new office space to capture moments of blending rather than the typical contrast. Realized by craftsmen’s familiar elements intrinsic to their craft, steel and glass became the medium in which to showcase old and new techniques to the building.
